Thematic Consultation with Haruwa- charauwa Group of children on Child-led UPR- siraha

The child-led Universal Periodic Review (UPR)  of the Haruwa-Charuwa community, convened between 25 to 27 May 2025 at Lahan’s Hotel Pacific, was a critical step towards increasing children’s participation in human rights promotion, particularly for one of Nepal’s most marginalized groups. As part of the UN Human Rights Council towards measuring member states’ human rights record in the 2006 mechanism, the special initiative provided Haruwa-Charuwa children with the platform to report and raise issues concerning the daily lives of human rights violation they face bonded labor, caste-based discrimination, denial of education, and child marriage. The activity facilitated the children to voice out and offer concrete policy recommendations in a protected, inclusive, and child-friendly setting. By empowering such children to engage meaningfully in national and international human rights mechanisms, the program not only placed voice to the most vulnerable but also demonstrated the possibility of transformative change in the way children can influence accountability and bring about lasting changes to government policy.
